SEA - DROP Camera 550/650: Black & White versus Color Underwater Photography

There was a day when B&W cameras were much more light-sensitive than color cameras. However, now our color cameras are just as sensitive as the B&W.

Tell a friend:

It takes less light reaching the camera board to produce a discernable image in B&W than in Color. Therefore, in low-light conditions, a B&W picture can be produced where a Color picture may not. However, our current Color cameras have the advantage of switching to B&W in these low-light conditions, producing images where historically they could not. This gives our Color cameras a distinct advantage over others.

The only possible situation where you might prefer a B&W camera as opposed to a Color is when you absolutely do not want color in your images under any conditions.

Remember that even in perfectly clear water, below depths of about 60 feet, much of the color spectrum will be absorbed by the water itself, even on sunny days. The reds and yellows will be lost first, leaving you with a blue-tinted image. This is true even with the naked eye. You will still get a picture, but the colors may be washed out. The only solution in such situations is to add light from an external source, such as our Sea-Light™.
